I am thrilled to be teaching and learning at Silver Creek Elementary for the last five years. Silver Creek Elementary is a small school with 65 students from Kindergarten to grade 8. We have four classrooms, all of which are multi-graded. The staff and community have embraced the benefits of multi-age learning and student leadership. We have created a multi-age reading program where older students listen to younger students read and then the older student reads to the little buddy. We also group our students into multi-age groups for special events like valentine’s day, gym riot, Indigenous games, and 100’s day. We love the leadership this develops in our older students and the community feeling within the school.
The playground at Silver Creek provides a forested area, tennis and basketball court, 2 playground structures and swings. Students can play in all of these areas. Our students use carpenter tools to build and create wood projects out in the playground in warm weather. Okanagan Regional Library is across the parking lot from the school.
Silver Creek community hall, senior’s centre, general store, post office and cemetery are all within walking distance from the school. Many Silver Creek families have lived in this area for generations. The school was built in 1976 and our school photos line the hallways with students from the past. The Silver Creek runs adjacent to the school grounds and the Salmon River is located within walking distance to the school.
