FSA assessment

 This is the time of year when our students in grades 4 & 7 begin participating in the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA). This annual provincial assessment, measures students’ academic skills and provides the district with a snapshot of students’ foundational skills in literacy and numeracy. All students in grades 4 & 7 are required by the Ministry of Education and Child Care to participate in the FSA. 

The results of the FSA serve as an important tool to support student learning in SD83 which will be particularly important as we continue to determine the impact of COVID-19 on student learning. The district also uses the assessment data to support the alignment of resources during our annual budget discussions. FSA data is not part of the formal student evaluation process and is not included in student report cards.

Suspicious vehicle reported


Today I was notified by a parent from Silver Creek that a suspicious vehicle has been seen driving around a bus stop for our school. RCMP have since been notified.

We have spoken to our students today about being safe on our way to and from school. I would invite you to have a more candid conversation with your child(ren) about never accepting rides from strangers, what to do if a stranger attempts to talk to them, etc.

We are committed to student safety and as a result we will ensure sufficient supervision takes place during recess and bus pick up and drop offs. The SD83 Transportation Department has been made aware of the situation and bus drivers have also been notified.

Rumours untrue

Recently there have been rumours about “cameras in student washrooms” that have generated some calls and emails to School District No. 83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap) and some of its schools.

“I want to assure everyone that these rumours are untrue and unfounded,” states Superintendent of Schools Donna Kriger. “SD83 is committed to student safety, privacy, well-being and learning. We are grateful for those concerned stakeholders who reached out to us from a place of positive intent.”

S83 is currently enjoying a school start up filled with renewed optimism and hope. “Our intention is to continue this positivity through the 2022-23 school year as we focus on keeping students first.”

Kriger asks that if parents do hear these types of rumours/information please take the time to check with your school principal to ensure the information is indeed accurate.

Welcome Back Everyone!

We are looking forward to a bright and happy school start-up next week! The school looks “squeaky clean” and the smiling staff have been setting-up their learning spaces in anticipation of an action-packed Fall season for this 2022-2023 school year! Thank you to everyone for the warm wishes and friendly welcome – I look forward to meeting many more parents and community members at school events and activities very soon!

School will be in session for students in grades 1-8 on Wednesday September 7 for a full day of school. This year, staff will be in session for an administrative day on Tuesday September 6.

Kindergarten students will be receiving packages with dates and times which follow a gradual entry plan. Please call the school if you have any questions regarding the Kindergarten start-up process.

New Student Registration is scheduled for Tuesday August 30 at the school. The office will be open 8:30am – 2:00pm. If this does not work for you, please call the school and we will assist you with an alternative plan. There are a few items required to complete a registration.

Please bring:

1) a birth certificate,

2) care card

3) a proof of physical address

A school newsletter, important forms, and our annual student fee information will be coming home with students during the first week of school. Our goal is to have students working together in multi-Grade learning groups and then placed into classes on Thursday September 8, after we confirm enrollment and finalize class composition and configuration.
